Mubrakiyah Revisited

Mubarakiyah is the heart of old Kuwait city better known as the Old Souk. The Souk comprises of many small markets such as fish, meat, vegetables, gold, hardware market and many others. The Old Souk was neglected for many years and buyers deserted it to more modern supermarkets and shopping malls. In recent years and after the souk has been renovated people seem to have rediscovered the beauty and the charm of the place and the old heart of the city started to pump again.
Here I try to take you on a pictorial journey to Mubarakiya so that you get to know the place and the people. This time I took along my new tiny toy the Fuji X10 camera to create these images.

من الرياضات الشعبية العريقة والقديمة التي تنفرد بها أمارة الفجيرة . مارسها الآباء والأجداد عبر الازمان واحياها الابناء الى يومنا هذا. أهالي منطقة الفجيرة يرون في ممارسة هذه الرياضة شكلاً أصيلاً من التراث الشعبي يرجع إلى مئات السنين و يؤكدون على عراقة هذا التقليد وارتباطه بإماراتهم .

تنظم حلبات النطاح عصر يوم الجمعة من كل أسبوع في ميدان اعد خصيصا لممارسةهذه الرياضة التراثية. حيث بيدأ الناس من مختلف الاعمار من مواطنين ومقيمين وسواح بالتوافد على الميدان وسرعان ما تبدأ المنازلات بين الثيران وسط هتاف وتشجيع الجمهور.

Khor Dubai is a saltwater creek located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). It ends at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. The creek divides the city into two main sections, Deira and Bur Dubai. In the early 20th century, the creek, though incapable then of supporting large scale transportation, served as a minor port for dhows coming as far away as India or East Africa. Although it impeded the entry of ships due to current flow, the creek remained an important element in establishing the commercial position of Dubai, being the only port or harbor in the city. Dubai's pearling industry, which formed the main sector of the city's economy, was based primarily on expeditions in the creek, prior to the invention of cultured pearls in the 1930s.

Fishing, also an important industry at the time, was also based along the creek where the warm and shallow waters supported a wide variety of marine life. Dhows used for purposes of fishing were also built on the foreshore of the creek. The importance of the creek as a site of commercial activity was a justification to introduce improvements to allow larger vessels to transit, as well as to facilitate loading and unloading activities. This led, in 1955, to a plan to develop the creek, which involved dredging shallow areas, building of breakwaters, and developing its beach to become a quay suitable for loading and unloading of cargo. The creek was first dredged in 1961 to permit 7 feet (2.1 m) draft vessels to cross through the creek at all times. The creek was dredged again in the 1960s and 1970s so that it could offer anchorage for local and coastal shipping of up to about 500 tons. The dredging opened up the creek to much more continuous traffic of merchandise, including the development of re-export, and gave Dubai an advantage over Sharjah, the other dominant trading centre in the region at the time. Al Maktoum Bridge, the first bridge connecting Bur Dubai and Deira was constructed in 1963. Although the importance of the creek as a port has diminished with the development of the Jebel Ali Port, smaller facilities, such as Port Saeed, continue to exist along the creek, providing porting to traders from the region and the subcontinent.

Including the most remarkable buildings alongside the Deira side of the Creek are the Deira Twin Towers, Dubai Creek Tower, Sheraton Dubai Creek, National Bank and Chamber of Commerce.

The creek's initial inlet into mainland Dubai is along the Deira Corniche and Al Ras areas of eastern Dubai and along the Al Shindagha area of western Dubai. It then progresses south-eastward through the mainland, passing through Port Saeed and Dubai Creek Park. The creek's natural ending is at the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from its origin at the Arabian Gulf. The traditional form of transport between the eastern and western sections of Dubai via the creek was through abras, which continue to operate in Dubai. In addition, the eastern and western sections are linked via four bridges (Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Garhoud Bridge, Business Bay Crossing and Floating Bridge) and one tunnel (Al Shindagha Tunnel).

Sidon or Saida, is the third largest city in Lebanon. It is located in the South Governorate on the Mediterranean coast about 40 km north of Tyre and 40 km south of the capital Beirut. It is a city of 200,000 inhabitants. Sidon has been inhabited since 4000 BC and perhaps as early as Neolithic times (4000 - 6000 BC). It was one of the most important Phoenician cities and may have been the oldest. From here and other ports a great Mediterranean commercial empire was founded. Homer praised the skill of its craftsmen in producing glass, purple dyes and the art of embroidery. Sidon until 1900 was a small fishing town of 10,000 inhabitants. Studies in 2000 showed a population of 65,000 in the city and around 200,000 in the metropolitan area. The little level land around the city is used for cultivation of wheat, vegetables and fruits, especially citrus, bananas and other Mediterranean fruits.

I spent an afternoon walking around the old part of the city, the old market place and the seaside accompanied by my little Canon G10 camera.

The Al Hamra Tower is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction in downtown Kuwait City, Kuwait. A Day Out in The Woods

I spent a day wondering in the woods near by Beit Eddin and Al-Shof Cedars Reservation in Lebanon. It was an ideal day in every respect and I had so much fun taking these photos using my usual tiny camera the Canon G10.

Al Jemaizeh is one of the oldest streets in Beirut. Traces of various civilizations can still be seen in its well preserved architecture. In recent years the quiet residential street has turned into a noisy and fashionable night spot with over 50 pubs, night clubs and coffee shops. In these images I tried to capture some of the interesting architectural elements of the street using a Canon G10 camera.

الجميزه.. أحد أقدم شوارع العاصمة اللبنانية بيروت يجمع بين العراقة التي تعد شاهدة على حضارة هذه المدينة، وبين المعاصرة التي تستقطب الكثير من السياح ومحبي السهر إلى هذا الشارع .
ويعتبر شارع الجميزه قلب بيروت النابض بالحياة والمزدحم بالناس والمقاهي والملاهي الليلية. لكنه قبل كل شيء معروف بأثاره التي رسمت تاريخ هذه المدينة حيث يحتضن الشارع الذي يقع في شمال وسط بيروت معالم تاريخية هامة تمثل بقايا بيروت العثمانية والمملوكية والصليبية والعباسية والرومانية والفارسية والفينيقية ، الى جانب أبنية قديمة شيدت ما قبل الانتداب الفرنسي.

Portobello Road

Portobello Road is a street in the Notting Hill district of The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in west London, England. It runs almost the length of Notting Hill from south to north, roughly parallel with Ladbroke Grove. On Saturdays it is home to Portobello Road Market, one of London's notable street markets, known for its second-hand clothes and antiques. Every August since 1996 the Portobello Film Festival has been held in locations around Portobello Road.
Portobello Road's distinctiveness does not just rely on its market. A range of communities inhabiting the street and the district contributes to a cosmopolitan and energetic atmosphere, as do the many restaurants and pubs. The architecture plays a part, too, as the road meanders and curves gracefully along most of its length, unlike the more formally planned layout of most of the nearby area. Mid- to late-Victorian terrace houses and shops predominate, squeezed tightly into the available space, adding intimacy and a pleasing scale to the street scape. The Friends of Portobello campaign seeks to preserve the street's unique dynamic, as the potential arrival of big-brand chain stores threatens the locals. The Portobello Road is also home to the Grade II* Electric Cinema, one of Britain's oldest movie theaters.

Templer Park, Kuala Lumpur

The Templer's Park Forest Reserve is located north of Kuala Lumpur, about 20 minutes away from the city. A verdant forest reserve forming a 1,214 hectares green lung for the city. This beautiful park is a precious repository for flora and fauna, and one of the last proper green lungs within the city outskirts. Located within the park are some beautiful multi-tiered waterfalls that are very popular among the visitors. Templer's park attracts nature lovers, picnickers and photographers.

I spent an afternoon in this magnificent place with my Canon G10 camera and came out with these images.

دمشق ... أقدم مدينة في العالم

تقسم مدينة دمشق القديمة والتي تعتبر أقدم مدينة في العالم ما زالت مسكونة ومأهولة بالسكان إلى منطقتين: الأولى داخل السور وهي الأقدم واستوطنت منذ آلاف السنين، والثانية خارج السور وتضم حارات مثل الصالحية والميدان والشاغور وساروجة وهذه بدأت بالظهور مع بداية العهد الأيوبي وما بعده.

دمشق القديمة داخل السور لا تتعدى مساحتها الكيلومتر المربع الواحد ولكنها زاخرة بمعالم كثيرة فأزقتها وحاراتها العريقة ذات الحجارة السوداء كالعمارة والقيمرية ومئذنة الشحم وأسواقها الشهيرة كالحميدية والبزورية ومدحت باشا والعصرونية والحرير وغيرها. وبيوتاتها وقصورها كقصر العظم والسباعي ومقاهيها كالنوفرة وجبري وع البال وموليا ومتاحفها كالبيمارستان النوري والتقاليد الشعبية والخط العربي والتاريخي وغيرها وجوامعها الشهيرة كالأموي الكبير وبوابات السبع وقبر صلاح الدين.

الأسواق المسقوفة
من أبرز معالم دمشق القديمة أسواقها المسقوفة، التي تحجب الشمس ليتمكن المتسوقون من التجول بالأسواق بسهولة، ولهذه الأسواق نكهة خاصة وتخصصات، فكل سوق له تجارته وزبائنه، وأكبر هذه الأسواق وأشهرها «الحميدية» الذي يمتد على خط مستقيم من الغرب حيث باب النصر وحتى الجامع الأموي، ويعود تاريخ بنائه إلى عام 1863 خلال العهد العثماني وحكم السلطان عبد الحميد، الذي سمي السوق باسمه. وهو مغطى بسقف حديدي مليء بثقوب صغيرة تضيئها شمس النهار فتبدو وكأنها نجوم تلمع في عتمة السوق. وحوانيت السوق تشتهر بجميع أنواع البضائع، لا سيما الملابس والأقمشة والحلويات والصناعات التقليدية كالبروكار والموزاييك والنحاس المزخرف بالفضة. وهناك سوق «مدحت باشا» أو السوق الطويل وأنشأه والي دمشق مدحت باشا عام 1878 ويسير السوق بموازاة سوق الحميدية، حيث تفصل بينهما أسواق صغيرة أخرى. وتقوم على جانبي السوق حوانيت صغيرة تشتهر بالنسيج الوطني والأقمشة الحريرية والعباءات الصوفية والكوفيات والعقل. كما توجد على الجانبين خانات قديمة ذات أبواب وأقواس أصبحت هي الأخرى مجمعاً للعديد من الحوانيت وفي منتصفه يصبح سوق مدحت باشا مكشوفاً حتى باب شرقي حيث يشتهر هذا الجزء بمعامل ومحلات المصنوعات النحاسية المحفورة والمزخرفة بخيوط الفضة، ويقول بعض علماء الآثار بانه حيث يبدأ هذا الجزء المكشوف أي في مصلبة مأذنة الشحم وتلة السماكة يقع المكان الذي بدأت فيه دمشق قبل آلاف السنين.

الجامع الأموي

من أبرز معالم دمشق القديمة ويقع في قلبها في نهاية سوق الحميدية أنشأه الخليفة الأموي الوليد بن عبد الملك عام 705 م في أوج عصر دمشق الذهبي، حين كانت عاصمة للدولة العربية الإسلامية، استغرق بناء المسجد حوالي عشر سنوات وبلغت تكاليفه أكثر من 11 مليون دينار ذهبي، وحشد للعمل فيه عدد ضخم من أمهر المعماريين والفنانين والبنائين والنجارين والمرخمين والمصورين، حتى جاء فريداً في هندسته وأصبح لعدة قرون نموذجاً يحتذى في بناء المساجد على امتداد العالم العربي والإسلامي.

Speaker's Corner

For over 150 years, Speaker's Corner has been one of London's most unique and eccentric attractions. On any given Sunday morning, anyone who has an opinion to air and anyone who will listen will gather at the point where Oxford Street and Hyde Park meet, in the shadows of Marble Arch and carry on an oral tradition that is becoming somewhat lost to a modern culture of email and online chat rooms.

A visit to Speaker's Corner will offer you a glimpse of London's real past, where people engage in earnest, open conversations that can quickly become loud and contentious debates. There's no parliamentary procedure here. It's freewheeling verbal contact and if you have a mind to, you're free to take part. Speakers require no qualification or invitation. It is as open a forum as you are likely to see anywhere in the world, a classless forum where one can really see grassroots democracy at work.

Topics for debate are in no way preordained, but they will tend towards the more provocative subjects of politics, religion, morality and current events.

Leslie James the Hyde Park pamphleteer wrote: Speakers' Corner has a more powerful influence than any "university" in the world, because here there are no entry requirements, no rules of intellectual formality and above all, no class restrictions.

Street Musicians "Buskers"

Street musicians perform in public places for a variety of reasons: for money, for fun, for attention, to meet people and socialize, for the love of their art, to practice their skills, or try out new material in front of an audience.

Some of the most famous groups and superstars in the entertainment industry started their careers as buskers "street performers". Pierce Brosnan, Bob Dylan, Bob Hope, Simon and Garfunkel, Rod Stewart, and Robin Williams. Many other buskers have also found fame and fortune.

THE SAATCHI GALLERY

The Saatchi Gallery is a London gallery for contemporary art, opened by Charles Saatchi in 1985 in order to exhibit his collection to the public. It has occupied different premises, first in North London, then the South Bank by the River Thames and currently in Chelsea.

Saatchi's goal is to show contemporary work that would otherwise not be seen in big London institutions such as Tate Modern. "The gallery's guiding principle is to show what is being made now by the most interesting artists of today.

Admission is free to all shows - including temporary curated exhibitions, as part of the Saatchi Gallery’s aim to bring contemporary art to the widest audience possible.

Interesting Floor Pattern

I came across this interesting floor pattern in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The soft light was coming from a huge skylight high above, spelling interesting patches of light and shadow on the scene. Overlooking the pattern from a higher floor I just had to release my camera "Canon G10" shutter when someone crossed the pattern.

Walking Along the Beach

Sign language is universal and possible to understand among all cultures. I find signboards very interesting especially traffic signs. I like window shopping while traveling and I am mostly attracted to the way shop windows are decorated rather than the products displayed. The combination of real life reflecting off the windows glass and the arrangements behind can create powerful images. Teddy is an alter ego. He willingly volunteered to be a social experiment to help create a life for someone who is trying to settle back into a society. This person is living vicariously through Teddy by establishing new relations, building a network, starting a new life, and trying new things. Teddy is real, and you can be a part of his life too.
